Worthing burger fanatic launches gourmet takeaway business from his front door

Carl Tupper spent his time on furlough experimenting with recipes at his Southfield Road home, inspired by burgers he has enjoyed all over the world since 2017.
While his day job is a territory manager for Sussex Cricket’s community department, Carl also runs a popular Instagram account, @myburgerjourney, where he documents the delicious burgers he tries on his travels.

Hide AdNow the 30-year-old has converted his home kitchen - achieving a five-star hygiene rating - and has already enjoyed three sell-out nights selling gourmet burgers from his front door under the name Burger Journey.
“The response has been overwhelming,” said Carl.
“Support from friends and local people has been incredible. I hope that we are able to continue to build our reputation and demonstrate our passion for burgers to as many people as possible in the coming weeks and months.
“Lockdown gave me the opportunity to experiment with a few ideas for burgers and allowed me to develop the recipes to get the perfect combinations. The menu is small, but mighty!
“I’ve always been interested in creating burgers and seeing how other people build them, all over the world. The burger scene in Australia a couple of years back was huge and a real inspiration.”

Hide AdAnticipation for Carl’s burgers grew after he shared pictures on social media and his opening night collection slots were filled in under 24 hours.
More than 30 customers arrived at his front door to collect a total of 25 burgers - numbers that have been repeated on two further dates since.
Burger Journey’s menu consists of three burgers served in brioche buns with the option to add homemade fries.
Bacon Jammy is a smashed beef patty alongside homemade bacon jam, double American cheese, mayo, mustard, crispy fried onions and shredded lettuce.

Hide AdHoly Cluck takes homemade fried chicken and adds buffalo sauce, mayo, American cheese, chives, pickles and shredded lettuce all dusted with Parmesan cheese.
Vegetarians are catered for by the Hallouminati with its pan-fried halloumi slabs, garlic butter flat mushroom, sticky mango chutney sauce, mayo, red onion and shredded lettuce.
Ingredients are sourced locally, with meat coming from Canham & Sons in Hove and buns from Flour Pot Bakery in Portslade. All packaging is fully biodegradable.

Orders are placed with the chef himself via the @myburgerjourney accounts with collection slots available on a first come, first served basis.
