That's the verdict of Time Out magazine on Third Party Productions' version of The Tragical Tale of Doctor Faustus – to be staged at the Under Ground Theatre on May 2 (7.30pm).
Condemned forever to tell and re-tell the Faustus story, Lucifer and
Mephistopheles picnic in the burned out remains of Faustus' study.
Director John Wright sticks to the words of Christopher Marlowe – but not necessarily in the right order.
To Marlowe's incomparable verse are added a little song and dance, a little magic, and the dulcet tones of the ukulele.
There's even a touch of ventriloquism as Faustus is mocked by his own image parodying his speech to Helen of Troy, while a blues-singing Lucifer riffs on the soul of a man.
This show is a roller-coaster of triumph and despair, love and damnation. It's fast, funny and full of surprises – and for students, this is Marlowe with lots of laughs and without the need to take notes.
But if you do have any questions – you can speak to the cast after the show.
Tickets cost £8, including the post show discussion, call 01323 737677 or buy them from the Tourist Information Centre or on the door.
