HAILSHAM Rotary Club has appointed its new president for 2008-09.
Ian Baker, who has been a member for 10 years, will be the club's 71st president.

He lives in Hailsham with his wife Linda and they have three children, Victoria, Neil and Natalie.

Both Ian and Linda are directors of WestWays Vending, a family-run drinks and snacks vending business based in the town.

Ian's commitment to the business was rewarded when it was nominated for a Sussex Business Award last year.

He also finds a little time for gardening.

Each year the president chooses a charity which he recommends the Rotary Club supports and this year Ian has given his backing to the Guides' Weald Division and the Brownies Bull River Project.

All sections of the Guide and Scout movement enjoy the great outdoors with camping at Bull River and learning new skills in perfect safety.

However the large campsite hut which has served them well since 1921 has to be replaced as soon as possible and they are trying to raise money to complete their dream of having a new building by 2010, their centenary year.

This new building will provide today's youngsters and future generations with a very special place to practice guiding and scouting.
Ian said, "I am delighted to have been elected to this office and am looking forward to my year enormously.

"The Rotary Club has an important part to play in the community and I aim to ensure that we continue with and hopefully increase the many projects we organise in Hailsham."

The club meets regularly at the Boship Farm Hotel on the A22 and has 35 members who take part in many fundraising activities throughout the year.
