Wood chipping is such a waste

In this day of rising fuel bills and people turning to alternative ways to keep warm, why don't the council let the public have access to all the cut down trees round the region?
I found an elm that had been pruned. As my wife turned up with the car to take some of this away to burn on our open fire, I was greeted with a man who had come to clear it away. I asked whether we could load the car up but the chap said he had to take the logs out of Eastbourne and that he couldn't possibly let me have any. I asked why and he replied he was not allowed. Why? This wood was just going to end up in a chipper, there was no talk of it being diseased and that's why we couldn't have it so why, oh why? What harm would it have done?
Isn't there now a call for a local area to be put aside for this wood to be put and allow the public access on a first come first serve basis. Hundreds of trees are felled for pruning purposes, others through weather damage, why can't we have access to them? It would save people so much money and help towards reducing our use of fossil fuels – surely a good thing. It is such a waste. – Ian Brooks, Percival Crescent, Hampden Park.
