At Brighton College, 38 per cent of all grades achieved were 9s, with ten pupils bagging at least nine grade 9s and another getting eight 9s in his reformed subject GCSEs plus the highest grade (A^) in the unreformed further maths.
These results come just two months after research carried out by Cambridge Assessment showed that just 200 pupils across the country will get a straight sweep of top grades in the new, tougher GCSEs.

The school also reported 100% of grades were 7 to 9 in chemistry, physics, biology, dance, Spanish, Latin, art, Greek, Arabic, DT, German, Italian and Mandarin.
Headmaster Richard Cairns said: “The most common grade at Brighton College in the first year of these tough new exams is a grade 9.

“I am also proud of the fact that Brighton College is almost alone among leading independent schools to embrace the new GCSEs while other independent schools have stuck with the easier international GCSEs which still include coursework. I am delighted for our pupils but also very proud of my teachers.
“A school is only ever as good as its teachers.”
