Then I was amused when I read in the paper that the West Parade scheme had won another award, but relieved to learn it was for the maintenance and not the design!
The scheme cost millions. We were promised all round colour with maintenance costs lower than before.

Hide AdWell done to local horticulturalist Anthony Hamilton for ensuring that when some of the failing plants in the griselinia hedge were replaced, yet again, it was mixed with elaeagnus which is far more likely to succeed .
Let’s gloss over the lorry loads of other plants shipped in, in full flower, just before the parade was officially reopened, when other plants in the scheme had also failed.
A pity the narrow path near the road is obstructed by plants at points and likely to be increasingly so as the hedge burgeons.
How difficult it must make it for parents with buggies and residents with mobility problems!

Hide AdEven if it won a hundred awards, to me, for most of the year, it will always be a cluttered cemetery bin city with wind tunnel ‘shelters.’
For more all round colour and beauty look to the East Parade and the Manor Gardens, not to this ‘sterile promontory’. A lasting memorial to folly.
