I've been suffering with long-term back problems and taking up swimming – something I haven't really done since I was a child – has been part of my recovery package.

The chance to exercise with my spine supported in the water and therefore minimising further strain is not the only reason why I've become a fan of Motcombe pool.

The place is extremely clean, friendly and well-run, welcoming anybody from very young children to the elderly, both beginners and experienced swimmers, and the able bodied and disabled.

Factor in the building's Edwardian charm – especially when the sun is shining through the glass roof onto the water – and you're onto a winner.

Unfortunately the age of Motcombe pool must push up maintenance costs. Last autumn, around about the time I first started to swim again, there were rumours flying that the pool was to close.

Happily that proved not to be true, as not only would the loss of the facility been a great blow to those who enjoy it, I would have felt I had put a hex on the place!

I visited Motcombe last Saturday and it was reassuring that money is still being spent on upgrading the facilities.

After almost an hour in the pool, my towel in my bag and wondering what I was going to buy for my dinner in Waitrose, I took a look at the notice board.

There was an announcement that manager SERCO is planning to revamp and modernise both the ladies' and gents changing rooms, including new shower facilities.

So it looks like Motcombe, despite its age, will be continuing to make a splash for a good few years to come.
