£1,000 fine for fly tipping
A SEAFORD man has been fined £1,000 for dumping nearly three tonnes of household waste at a local beauty spot.
Ben Stempt, of Raymond Close, pleaded guilty to the offence at Hastings Magistrates Court.
The 24-year-old had dumped the household waste and fending material near Wilmington in October 2007.
Wealden District Council launched the prosecution and said Stempt's conviction should be a warning to potential fly-tippers.
Mike Pashler, head of waste and commercial services, said, "All instances of fly-tipping are investigated by our Street Scene Enforcement Officers and, as this case has shown, we use good investigative work to find those responsible."
Wealden has dealt with nearly 800 fly-tipping incidents at a cost of almost £40,000 per year. More than two-thirds are cleared by the council within two days.
Cllr Pam Doodes, leader of the district council, said, "Fly-tipping spoils our environment, is expensive to clear up and ultimately it is our council tax payers who have to foot the bill.
"Whether it happens in town or in a beautiful countryside location like Wilmington, it's unpleasant, illegal and potentially dangerous."
