A special competition in the Haywards Heath Golf Club calendar
Dark grey and menacing, they rumbled overhead and threatened to unload their heavy burden on the waiting golfers. We were prepared for the worst; umbrellas, wet gear and hats. However, as quickly as they arrived, the clouds dissipated to be followed by beautiful blues skies.
The competition is a rather special one in the Haywards Heath Golf Club calendar. It is held in memory of a former Captain of the Club, Bill Watters, who was a Scot and apparently fond of his Scotch. Bill’s daughter, Jo, came along after the competition to thank everyone for attending and to explain the meaning of the title of the competition, ‘The Bill Watters Quaich’. She explained that a Quaich was the name given to a drinking vessel which would be filled and shared between friend and foe alike – depicting friendship and cordiality.
